Body Contouring Questions
Can I get body contouring if I am overweight?
Yes body contouring surgery can be performed if you are overweight and usually involves combining liposuction with skin resection surgery such as tummy tuck, arm lift and or thigh lift surgery. Your results can be improved by losing as much weight as possible prior to surgery. If you are extremely overweight, then weight loss must be accomplished before having a body contouring procedure. A consultation with Dr. Linderman can determine what the best course of treatment for you.
Is body contouring safe?
Body contouring surgery performed by an experienced Indianapolis plastic surgeon on appropriate patients is certainly a safe procedure. Factors to consider are your overall general health, your height and weight and amount of surgery to be performed as well as the time required. A thorough consultation and evaluation with Dr. Linderman can answer these questions.
What is the cost for body contouring surgery?
Body contouring surgery includes numerous procedures including body lifts, belt lipectomy, thigh and arm lifts. Because of the varying complexities of these procedures and patient variation, it is hard to give a good cost estimate without a thorough consultation.
How much body contouring can be done at one time?
Normally I prefer to limit the total time of surgery to under six hours of anesthesia as risks do increase beyond this time. Procedures are often combined such as breast surgery and tummy tuck surgery. Other combinations include arm lift and tummy tuck surgery. The amount and number of procedures is tailored to your desires but remember safety always comes first.
What are the risks and side effects?
Risks and side effects of body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck, breast lift, arm and thigh lifts are very similar. They include bleeding, infection, and fluid collection, scarring, and delayed healing or wound healing problems. Very unlikely complications include blood clot formation.
Are the results permanent?
Results of body contouring surgical procedures are permanent with removal of excess skin and reduction of fatty deposits. In patients who have experienced massive weight loss after surgery, there may be some loss of skin elasticity following removal of large amounts of redundant skin.
What areas can be treated?
Areas commonly treated with body contouring surgery include the trunk, abdomen, breasts, arms and legs. Procedures performed include breast lift, arm and thigh lift, tummy tuck, and body lift surgery.
Are there scars?
With any surgical procedure, there are scars and this is particularly true with body contouring surgery where large amounts of excess skin may be removed. The more skin removed, the longer the scar. Every effort is made to place the scars within skin clothing lines. With some procedures such as arm lift or brachialplasty this is not always possible. As a patient you may have to decide if the resulting scar is fair trade off for removal of excess skin that concerns you.
Is the procedure painful?
Yes there is pain with body contouring surgery but it is generally no greater than other types of surgery and is managed with medication.
Do I have to wear a special garment after surgery?
Depending upon the procedure performed, a postoperative compressive garment may be worn for up to a month after surgery. This is particularly applicable if liposuction is done. This helps to minimize swelling and bruising and aid in skin contraction.
When can I resume normal activities or go back to work?
This really depends on the amount and type of body contouring surgery performed but is generally one to two weeks after surgery. Other considerations depend upon the patient and type of work being performed.
Can body contouring and liposuction be done at the same time?
Yes body contouring surgery and liposuction can be and usually are done at the same time. A typical example is performing liposuction with a standard tummy tuck to improve the overall results. When indicated, Dr. Linderman will perform circumferential liposuction of the trunk combined with a tummy tuck to obtain the best improvement of these areas.
